Racial Justice reads reaction

How does a story captures a realistic problem to get the audience attention and make them read more about it? The line that I like from the video is when Kiese Laymon shared a a short passage about the night of the Rodney King verdict, The quote I like is ” I didn’t want to teach white folks not to steal. I didn’t want to teach white folks to treat us respectfully. I wanted to fairly fight white folks and I wanted to knock them out.” The reason why I like this quote is that it shows that the narrator is tired of white people on mistreating minorities and the only way to stop racism is to fight them back. It tells on how their are minorities that are tired of the unfairness and are thinking that violence will solve the answer. The three stories that were read from the videos tells on how the story is serious and has realistic problems that could related to the readers. The stories are interesting due to the topics that are mention, but I was interested on the Rodney King Verdict paragraph. The reaction that I have informed me that the previous reading that I have read tells that the stories will be relatable and tackle serious subject the people face. The expectation that I have when it comes to these author that I read from their passage shows that they are not holding back when it comes to their stories, they will go to serious subject to the story to relate to the audience or make the audience have a new view on the subject and release on how the story is impactful when it comes to the writing. And shows on how different people could have different types of problems weather could be racism, sexism or identity.

MY EXPECTATIONS ABOUT THIS CLASS

Set High Expectations with Your Employees in These Three Areas
Raise the level of my expectations for my English class
Better Together - The Scholarly Kitchen
TOGETHER

We may all have different expectations for this class, but I’m sure all those expectations are good if we really want to learn. We give everything we have to show that if we are attentive and we are interested in learning something new, and I think I would show all my interest in this class to be able to show that I have the curiosity to learn something different from I what learned in my other classes English in high school. I will be very responsible with the tasks that the teacher assigns me, I will not disrespect anyone in this class and I hope to receive the same respect that I offer, create strong ties of connection so that we can all trust each other and everything is less complicated , help each other, not criticize others if we make a mistake in something, much less discriminate. Also, I hope the teacher will be patient with me and everyone if we can’t understand something perfectly. Finally, I hope to finish the semester with good grades and get my credits, and most importantly, come out with new knowledge.

Another of my biggest expectations is to get a good GPA. In high school I graduated with a GPA of 87.60 and in these 4 years I hope to obtain a higher GPA, a GPA of 3.8 – 4

MY WISH IS TO SUCCESSFULLY PASS THIS CLASS, I ALSO WISH THE SAME FOR EACH ONE OF YOU. TOGETHER WE STARTED THIS CLASS AND TOGETHER YOU MUST FINISH IT TO GO TO THE NEXT LEVEL.

Class 04: Sept 13

Good morning and welcome back after a 12-day hiatus. Happy new year if you celebrate it, and happy first day of school for those of you with little siblings, cousins, kids, etc.

There were some nice conversations on the blog over the last few days. A few posts I’d like to highlight are those by Christopher, Jamy, and Kedwin. Each of the writers published their freewrite on our blog with a title and a tag, and one person commented on their post. Great job folks. If you didn’t add a tag, please do. If you didn’t add an image or make an interesting title, you can do that between now and Sept 27. Comments are closed. These pieces will be graded on a 5-point scale between now and our next class meeting, with two points assigned to the letter and one each to the title, the tag, and the comment from your peer. These are private. You should see them on your end of the Commons page; I haven’t used them before so we’ll learn together.

We will spend some time in class today wrapping up our previewing activities, including the “Page 99 test.” We’ll also discuss our annotations on the readings for today. We’ll also take a look at the prompt for Essay 1,

Expectation

My expectations for this class are for everyone to be respectful, on time, and to come to class prepared. My expectations with the instructor would be to establish a connection based on trust and guidance. Expectations I have to each other should be to learn in a safe space, listening to one another when someone is speaking, and to begin to know one another. During high school, we are taught to be responsible for our learning, especially since our education is defined by our ideals and efforts. Based on past connections with my teachers, I found that it was easier to establish a connection by speaking a little bit about ourselves to each other, such as giving a secret and getting one in return. When it comes to learning alongside my peers, it is imperative that we do not judge each other for trivial reasons, especially when we are learning together and individually, not one or the other.

Expectations: Myself, My Class, My Professor

This year, I have put a couple of expectations for myself. First one is to continue doing my best, even when it can get really hard. I am a good learner, but I have struggled with virtual classes this past year and a half.

As everyone in this class, I have a set goal of what I want to achieve academically, and I will work towards that goal.

I expect our instructor to be respectful, compassionate and understanding. As you all know, our lives can become pretty chaotic, so it is important to be able to talk and get the help and assistance that we need. Instructors define part of our experiences.

Same thing goes for all of the students in this class. We are no longer high school students. Let’s talk to each other with respect, without judgement.

Class 03: Sept 1

Welcome back.

Our goal for today is to continue discussing reading practices; introduce summary and citation practices; continue previewing texts.

In class today, you’ll respond to “The Cover of my Face” in a way that builds on reading practices we discussed Monday. There were some great questions in the Hypothe.is conversation, and you’ll start there in breakout rooms, then move to a fuller-class discussion. We’ll also look at page 99 of all three texts using the same close reading skills you practiced with Hypothes.is. This is the same way you’ll read “La Otra” by Jaquira Diaz and “Quick Feet” by Kiese Laymon, your assigned texts for Sept 13.

Looking forward, we’ll be using the library to continue to locate texts to use to make our “Pick a book” decision. We’ll briefly go over the Assignment Sheet for Essay 1, on our class site, and the Library Assignment, on our Goals and Plans Doc. That essay’s peer edit draft is due Sept 22, with a revision due Sept 29. You’ll work in Google Docs for peer editing, and the final version will be published to a Commons site that you’ll start over this week, and which you’ll use throughout the semester to make your portfolio.

As a reminder, please log in to CUNY Academic Commons and to turn on Hypothes.is as we start class. If you’re having trouble with Hypothes.is, please be sure you’ve registered and installed the plug-in on Chrome, and joined our class group. If you’re still having trouble, talk with me after class and just follow along the best you can. There will be time in small groups for you to ask a friend from class to help you explain that process. You also should contact IT, whose information is on our syllabus.

Let’s get started with the “Goals and Plans” Doc.

Expectations

Hello, my name is Jamy Swensen. The expectations for this course and everyone involved are relatively simple. I hope to build a good connection and relationship with my peers to help eachother grow and succeed. In my past English class, my class discussed and talked a lot about certain texts and books that we were assigned to read. Having feedback, new perspectives and a confirmation of ideas helped significantly with my class experience. Also, knowing that there were people who were willing to help and understood the struggle I was going through helped ease some frustration that stemmed from the work. I just want to have the best class experience possible and pursuing a good relationship with my peers will help with that.

THE EXPECTATION LETTER

I am fine here and I wish you are doing well in your place! I’m looking forward to a happy and helpful semester, collage is a new journey for most of us , so I hope we can enjoy and benefit from it ,life had been harder for the past two years, we’ve all suffered and it was really hard being in a pandemic and being introduced to a whole knew life style, but hopefully we can work together and we can learn from each other, my expectation for this semester is to develop my skills in writing and analyzing and I’m planning on getting high grades and giving my best.In addition, I wanna be more social and less introverted,I’m hoping to be a great student, classmate, and friend!

           Thank You

My expectations; free write

Every academic year, I always set expectations for myself just like every other student does. Some of those traditional expectations are to excel in every class, to pass all those difficult tests with honorable grades and to participate. But sometimes life throws a curveball and suddenly I lower my expectations. However, this school year I have daily reminders as to why I should uphold those expectations. Some are, my family, and my future goals that require me to become successful. I consider myself an introvert, but this year I want to put myself out there more and do things out of my comfort zone like turn on my camera during virtual classes and participate and start conversations. For my instructor, I expect great communication, I want to be certain that when in doubt I am able to reach out and get assistance and clarity. For my classmates I want us to feed off each others ideas, to make each other comfortable enough to share our thoughts without fear of being judged. I want us to provide a safe environment and for everyone to reach out when in need of help.
